My dear……….,
“Indian Leader Survives Vote; Onus Now on U.S.Congress”
“Nuclear Pact, Seen as Key to Cementing Ties, Faces Delay”
was the front page top news of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) of Wednesday,
23 July 2008.
There was a color photograph taken from the TV broadcast showing an opposition lawmaker (member of Parliament) holding up bundles of cash on the parliament floor.
Although it was a great day for the Congress Party, more particularly to
Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India who could muster 275 votes against 256 with a good margin.
It was an unexpected victory for him and most of the Indians.
The opposition parties especially the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bhartiya Janata Party were not happy and undermined the victory of the Congress Party.
Whenever the election is nearby in a democracy whether it’s a developed or developing country the economic condition gets affected.
In India the inflation has increased to double digits from a low of somewhere four or so.
The rise in food and fuel prices and the drop in stock market, are some of the worth mentioning events in every part of India.
The next national election must be held by May 2009.
Before that Dr. Singh wants to complete the formalities of the nuclear pact with the US.
But U.S. congressional approval of the nuclear pact remains in doubt.
The U.S. Congress is only scheduled to be in session for three weeks in September, and already has a lengthy list of bills to consider.
The legislators and analysts’ feel that the approval may take place only in January 2009 when the new President takes over the Government from
George W. Bush.
We do not know what Dr. Singh is going to do, if that is the case.
The WSJ also allotted a full page (no.13) analyzing the news in detail with photographs of L. K. Advani, Kumari Mayawati, Prakash Karat (Opposition) and Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Mulayam Singh Yadav.
In addition, a detailed account about Rahul Gandhi, son of Sonia Gandhi was given by Peter Wonacott and expects him as the future Prime Minister of India.
Anyway, it was an interesting reading from a well-known newspaper WSJ published from Dow Jones & Co.,
Congratulations to Dr. Manmohan Singh and Madam Sonia Gandhi.
Yours,
NARA
