Dear………..,
Olympians either win gold, silver or bronze medals depending on their skill and strength.
No one will be getting cash prize although they spend enormous amount of money for their training, travel and stay at the Olympic village.
That was the case in olden times.
Nowadays, the situation has changed
Each country is proud of sending their own sportsmen and women to win gold for their country.
It has become a prestigious issue for each country.
Therefore, if the Olympians win a gold or as a matter of fact silver or even bronze, they are given cash awards either by the National Sports Councils, Governments or Private Agencies.
Thus the winning brings more money, which is an encouragement for the Olympians.
Some countries never won a gold so far.
If these countries win a gold, the country and its people are happy more than a country, which harvest a number of gold medals.
It is quite natural for such countries to become happy and do something for the gold winner as a token of appreciation.
In Olympics 2008 at Beijing Mr. Abhinav Bindra won India’s first ever individual gold medal in the men’s 10-metre air-rifle competition.
The Sports Authority of India gave him $71,000.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India said it would give Mr. Bindra a cash award of $60,000.
The Minister of Railways, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav awarded him and a companion a free, lifetime rail pass to travel in a first class air-conditioned compartment.
The steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal announced a $357,000 award from his London-based Mittal Champions Trust.
Similarly Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, China and even the USA offered cash awards to the Olympians who won gold, silver and bronze medals.
Is it not a good gesture?
I feel it is.
Yours,
